Green Of the Month: Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis ‘Little John’)

Green Of the Month: Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis ‘Little John’)

Green of the Month:

Compact yet colorful, Little John is a versatile, low-water evergreen shrub that brings vibrant energy to desert and waterwise landscapes. Typically mounding to about 3 ft tall and 3–5 ft wide, it thrives in full sun to light shade and flourishes in well-drained soil once established.

From spring through summer and even intermittently year-round it shows off bright red, bottlebrush-shaped blooms that are a magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.

Why ‘Little John’ is perfect for your landscape:

Pollinator powerhouse: Vivid, nectar-rich flowers support a healthy garden ecosystem

Water-smart: Drought-tolerant once established, with minimal irrigation needs

Low-maintenance: Slow-growing, deer-resistant, and virtually pest-free

Compact & versatile: Great for borders, hedges, containers, or mass planting

Year-round beauty: Evergreen foliage and recurring blooms offer lasting appeal

Support biodiversity—plant with purpose!
